Listening guide

Choose by what you want to hear

Nature sounds are recordings of events, not interchangeable noise colors. Waves have a repeating rise and fall. A stream is flowing water in one place. A forest or night scene contains smaller events against a background.

The choices above let you hear Forest, Stream and Waves without opening another page. The collection below leads to the individual recordings and their own controls and notes.

A recording or a soundscape?

A single layer is one edited excerpt. A soundscape combines independently recorded layers: for example, forest with stream, or rain with thunder. Adding two layers creates a new mix; it does not make them a recording of one real location.

Start with one sound so you can notice its character. Add another only if it gives you something you want to hear. Eight simultaneous layers is the mixer limit, not a target.

Use the collection to compare

For water, compare ocean, stream and underwater: they were recorded from different perspectives. For weather, compare rain, wind and thunder. Night and forest offer a different kind of detail.

The short clips loop while you listen. If one event becomes too familiar, try another recording or a different balance. Provenance and source duration are available for every recording.

Recordings & sources

The player repeats the short audio files below for as long as your session runs. The loop length is the length of each file, not a limit on listening time. Events within a recording may repeat.

Start at a comfortable level. The volume percentages describe player settings; they do not measure the sound level at your ears. Playback with a locked screen or a background tab depends on your device and browser. Opening another page stops playback.

Common questions

Are these natural recordings or generated sounds?

The natural layers in this collection are prepared field recordings. White, pink and brown noise are generated separately and are listed in their own pages, not presented as field recordings.

Can I combine more than one nature sound?

Yes. Open the mixer with the current setting and add more layers, up to eight at once. Each layer has its own level. The mixer opens paused.

Are the recordings live?

No. Short edited files repeat during playback. A combination of layers is a soundscape assembled from those files, not a live feed from a forest or beach.
