Listening guide

Two recordings make this storm

This soundscape combines the Rain recording with a separate Thunder recording. It is a constructed mix, not a claim that both were captured at the same place or time. The credits below identify each source.

Thunder has discrete rumbles rather than a completely uniform texture. The short prepared excerpt repeats, so the same event can return during a longer session.

Keep the thunder behind the rain

Use the Rain slider to set the continuous background, then lower Thunder until the rumble sits where you want it. Set Thunder to zero for rain without that layer. Master Volume changes the overall level of both.

Thunder alone removes the added rain layer so you can hear the thunder recording by itself. The source recording may still contain surrounding weather; separate layers do not mean laboratory-isolated sounds.

Compare a storm with plain rain

If the returning rumbles keep catching your attention, use plain Rain rather than making the storm louder. If you enjoy variation, keep a little thunder and try it during a reading break.

For a longer session, set a timer. The setting changes when playback should end; it does not change the weather events or turn this into a live stream.

Recordings & sources

The player repeats the short audio files below for as long as your session runs. The loop length is the length of each file, not a limit on listening time. Events within a recording may repeat.

Start at a comfortable level. The volume percentages describe player settings; they do not measure the sound level at your ears. Playback with a locked screen or a background tab depends on your device and browser. Opening another page stops playback.

Common questions

Can I make the thunder quieter than the rain?

Yes. Rain and Thunder have independent level sliders. Master Volume changes the whole soundscape; the two layer sliders change its balance.

Is this the same as the rain sounds page?

The rain page starts with only Rain. This page adds a separately controlled Thunder layer and explains how to balance a storm. You can choose Thunder alone here as well.

Is the thunder guaranteed not to wake me?

No. A recording contains changing events, and your response depends on its level and your environment. Preview it first; choose a steadier texture if the rumbles are distracting.
